Monthly Wrap Up – June 2014

Wow, I can’t be the only one who felt like June just flew by. I can’t believe that in just 30 minutes (for me at least) it will be July 1st and that 4th of July is this Friday! June definitely didn’t turn out to be as successful as I had anticipated on it being. I finally got a new job that I began at the beginning of this month, but haven’t been scheduled since Monday the 16th thanks to over hiring and bad business. I’ve been job hunting like crazy during the day with no luck so far but I’m keeping my hopes up. No job basically means no extra spending money for books 😥 , the struggle is real.

June definitely had some good moments though. I am successfully registered for all of my fall classes. I declared my major finally, and it’s kind of confusing to explain but I am a Public Relations/Advertising major, which is a track in their Communications major, which is part of their Liberal Arts program. Confusing, but basically I will be taking my general education classes with some language, communications and marketing classes thrown in the mix. Hopefully once I graduate I will be able to get a job at a children’s publishing company. Those are the goals. I am also taking a 2.5 hour class on Thursdays from July 10 to August 7 so I can volunteer to be an elementary reading tutor at one of the local libraries so that should be fun and a new experience.

I read some pretty good books this month as well and bought/rented quite a few too. While I feel like I didn’t read nearly as much as I could have, I am going to have to get more serious this month because I have a huge TBR list that I need to make a dent in. I’m still trying to work up the courage to make a TBR list video because some of these books look really good and I feel like I read a lot of books that are different. (My opinion lol, I could be completely wrong though.) I guess basically what I meant was I skip back and forth from one genre to the next. One day I’ll be reading a light, YA romance novel and then a couple of days later it will be a dystopian based novel. Oh well, I read what makes me happy and when it comes to reading that is the only thing that matters 🙂

In the month of July, I am going to try completing a challenge. I want to try to complete The Book Genre Challenge hosted by eternal-books. July’s genre is classics which isn’t my go to genre, but I have been wanting to try reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, which I had to Google if it was considered a classic just to be positive it would qualify and it does. I will explain my reasoning behind wanting to read that novel when I do a review on it. Since the challenge is basically to read one book from that genre a month, I think I may have to stick with just one classic for July. I have read classics in the past, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, ect., and don’t think I will be rereading any of them anytime soon due to my long list of books that I am already waiting to read for the first time.

Books I Read This Month:

-Things I Can’t Forget by Miranda Kenneally (great book but didn’t review)

-Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita

-Summer State of Mind by Jen Calonita

-Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

-How Zoey Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True by Sarah Strohmeyer

-The Year I Turned Sixteen by Diane Schwemm

-Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess

So seven books read this month, I guess it could be worse. I am also almost done Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess which is actually a reread for myself. I read it a couple of years ago and rented it from the library earlier today. Not one hundred percent sure if I will do a review on it or not, but I most likely will because I absolutely love all of Laura Wiess’ books that I have read so far. Since I am so close to finishing, I am counting it as a June read. Today I also finished an extended excerpt from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han (another one of my favorite authors) and OMG, I need to go out and buy the book asap now. It was so good and I am going to cry if I can’t pick up where I left off soon. If you are interested in reading free books and extended excerpts, you can go to www.pulseit.com and make an account. They have free books for a limited time that are always changing. The only downside to this is that you have to read the book on the computer, or a tablet of some sort. I was reading mine on my iPad and it worked wonderfully.

Books I Bought/Rented This Month:

-Things I Can’t Forget by Miranda Kenneally (bought)

-How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True by Sarah Strohmeyer (bought)

-17 First Kisses by Rachael Allen (bought)

-The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry (bought)

-The Night She Disappeared by April Henry (bought)

-Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess (rented)

-Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout (rented)

-Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson (rented)

-We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (rented)

-Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour (rented)

-The Prince of Venice Beach by Blake Nelson (rented)

-The Selection by Kiera Cass (rented)

-Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore

The last three I reserved at the library, one is ready for me to come pick up and I am hoping the other two will be shortly. My goal is to at least read and review all of  the rented books before July is over. Fingers crossed that it will happen.

How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True by Sarah Strohmeyer

I have to be honest and admit this book was sitting in my cart on Amazon for months before I finally bought it last month. I really enjoyed it and while I was originally thinking this was going to taking place in Disney World (just with a fake name), it actually hit closer to home (will explain later). How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True is a great book to add to your summer TBR list. It was quick and funny with just the right amount of drama and romance along with some surprises.

When cousins Zoe and Jess land summer internships at Fairyland Kingdom theme park, they are sure they’ve hit the jackpot. With perks like hot Abercrombie-like Prince Charmings and a chance to win the coveted $25,000 Dream & Do grant, what more could a girl want?

Once Zoe arrives, however, she’s assigned to serve the Queen – Fairyland’s boss from hell. From spoon-feeding the Queen’s evil lapdog caviar to fetching midnight sleeping tonics, Zoe fears she might now have what it takes to survive the summer, much less win the money.

Soon backstabbing interns, a runaway Cinderella, and cutthroat competition make Zoe’s job more like a nightmare than a fairytale. What will happen when Zoe is forced to choose between serving the Queen and saving the prince of her dreams?

(Summary taken from back cover)

I love Disney World and assumed for some reason that Fairyland Kingdom was going to be Disney World with a fake name, which it was not. If anyone has ever visited (and maybe even heard of) Storybook Land in southern New Jersey, I think Fairyland Kingdom is more along those lines. Growing up in New Jersey and going to Storybook Land quite often, I was kind of happy to see that this took place in my home state.

Onto the characters. I loved Zoe and how she constantly put everyone ahead of herself even though she was just getting over the loss of her mother. Some of the interns I liked and some of them I absolutely hated. Some of the interns I also thought I hated but felt differently towards them at the end of the book.

The book does have a good amount of drama and romance in it and during the last couple of chapters, you are in for a big surprise. The ending to How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True was just the icing on the cake. It took me by surprise and had be smiling like a little kid at the end because I was so happy with how everything had ended. I finished this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down. It was quick and easy, but definitely very, very, very enjoyable and one I am sure to read again.

If you have never read How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True and you are looking to add a light, cute book to your summer TBR list, I would definitely recommend it. Sarah Strohmeyer also has another book out called Smart Girls Get What They Want, which I’ve added to my summer TBR list and if you enjoyed How Zoe… I would say go for her second book as well!

Top Ten Tuesday 06/17/2014

ttt

Wow, so I just realized I haven’t posted anything since last Tuesday. This new job has me going crazy though, and in pursuit of a second job as well. Anyhow, I am going to try to get back on top of everything. I did just finish a book Sunday that I loved. I will be posting a review on it this week since I am off the next couple of days! (Yay!) So today is my favorite blogging day, Top Ten Tuesdays. I love making lists and I think that’s why I enjoy Tuesdays the most. Top Ten Tuesday topics are always thought up by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is: Top Ten Books On My Summer TBR List. Sorry because some of these books may be repeats from last week’s list, but that is only because I am so excited to read them.

1.) Nantucket Red by Lelia Howland

2.) Since Last Summer by Joanna Philbin

3.) Thirty Sunsets by Christine Hurley Deriso

4.) Summer of Yesterday by Gabby Triana

5.) Let’s Get Lost by Adi Alsaid

6.) Through to You by Lauren Barnholdt

7.) Pretty Little Liars: Toxic by Sara Shepard

8.) Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

9.) What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick

10.) After the End by Amy Plum (Had to throw one distopia in the list!)

And a random list of more books on my summer TBR list because let’s face it, there is no way I only have ten on my list…

-Side Effects May Vary – Julie Murphy

-The Program and The Treatment – Suzanne Young

-Hollow City – Ransom Riggs

-The Beginning of Everything – Robyn Schneider

-We Were Liars – E. Lockhart

-The Geography of You and Me – Jennifer E. Smith

-Rock and a Hard Place, Royally Lost, Love ‘Em or Leave ‘Em, Dream Chaser, Snowed Over – Angie Stanton

-Getting Over Garrett Delaney, Sophomore Switch, The Anti-Prom, Jane Austen Goes to Hollywood – Abby McDonald

-Smart Girls Get What They Want – Sarah Strohmeyer

-The Prince of Venice Beach – Blake Nelson

Okay I am going to leave it at that even though there are plenty more books I could add. I am hoping I can read most of these before summer is over, but if not, at least by the end of the year.
